Hey Scout, the package arrived last week. Not bad.... 2.5 weeks from NC to South Africa! The throttle body and rebuild kit look great!
The additional gasket set and shorter military linkage spring were not in the box. The box was intact. Do you remember including them?

Good news. I don’t recall every thing I included. If you need them I’ll send them.

If you can that would be best. Otherwise I will end up with projects I can't complete.
Missing are the following: A carb re-gasket kit. Shorter military return spring for throttle linkage.
Thanks Rick

Hi Scout, I have been preparing to complete the rebuild on my carb, hopefully this coming weekend. I was going through the kit and identifying all the parts and grouping them as recommended in the Carter Service guide. I have a few questions, if I may: 1) I have 2 parts i can't identify and I don't know where they go. One is a tiny brass ring. Is this a gasket (20-72) for the extra 539 nozzle (12-255) that comes with the kit, and hence not needed? The other is a brass washer, the ID of the washer is bevelled on one side only. Where does this go? 2) There are 2 small brass screws and 2 silver plated screws to connect the choke and throttle valves to their shafts. Which takes the brass screws and which takes the silver plated screws? Thank you!

The small brass spacer is for the 539S nozzle. The brass washer is placed on the metering rod pin threaded end then the nut is placed. Take note that there is a flat on the pin which engages the slot to help lock it in.
Has the package arrived yet?

Thanks Scout, the second package has not arrived yet. The first took 3 weeks, so I wouldn't worry quite yet.

Does the accelerator pump leather need any special treatment prior to installation, or is it installed straight out the kit?
Does it matter whether the choke or throttle valve get the brass vs the silver screws?

I have installed them dry for years. Gas will soak them. Make sure it doesn't bind dry or it will seize wet. Brass screws in the throttle plate. Silver in the choke plate.

Hey Scout. OK, so I put some time into the carb this weekend and I have it mostly back together. I learned a lot in the process.
Having the correct tools helped. I got all the old rivets out and new ones in again without issue.
One question. I have set the accelerator pump stroke and got exactly 17/64" after lots of adjusting. I then set the metering rod pin using the gauge. Now, with the throttle completely closed (idle stop screw backed right out so as not to touch the boss), the metering rod appears to bottom out and the top of the eye sits up off the pin, it does not "hang" on the pin. Is this correct? It would mean that the accelerator pump starts some of its stroke before the metering rod starts lifting, because the pin first has to take up the clearance in the eye of the rod before the pin starts to lift. Does this sound correct?
I had mixed results with the kit. In particular the throttle connector rod clip snapped upon installing it, at the top of the bend where it clips onto the rod. I was able to proceed by cannibalizing my other carb. The metering rod pin in the kit seemed a little bit too short, and the eye of the rod was jammed tight between the hairclip and the pin flange behind it, so it was not free to hang on the pin. That didn't seem right. I went back to the old pin and there is more space for the rod to move. The rod is now free to hang on the pin once the throttle is partially opened. Apart from those mishaps I've followed the Carter instructions to the letter and the carb is looking very good. I'll send a pic when I'm done. I just don't want to finish up if there is some issue with the metering rod and pin adjustment. I'll wait to hear back from you first on that one.
Cheers,
Mike

The gap between the inside top of the eye and the pin should be no more than just enough to see daylight between them.

That is what I had expected. But, I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. With the accelerator pump stroke set to 17/64" (throttle fully closed with idle screw backed out to not be touching the boss, to fully open, using proper Carter gauge), I set the metering rod pin to just rest on the shoulder of the metering rod gauge like so: When I then set the metering rod on the pin, again throttle completely closed with idle screw backed out, it looks like this: Quite a lot more daylight than there should be. The throttle has to open a fair amount before the pin takes up the space and starts lifting the rod. So, what gives?
